ASL Musicality · Self-Paced
A Course by Rosa Lee Timm
A study of rhythm, timing, and meaning in American Sign Language.
Where language lives not only in the signs, but in what happens between them.

Sometimes the most important moment of a phrase is the one just after it ends.Rosa Lee Timm
One song, many voices
Six ASL artists were given one challenge: translate a short excerpt of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman, and carry its musicality into a visual language.
Not one of them made the same choices. That is the whole course. Their work runs through every module — not one artist to a module, but wherever their choices show you what that module is about.
You will learn to see what each of them is doing, why it works, and what it means for what you do.
Five modules · and a bonus
Where rhythm lives before the first lyric arrives — pacing, breath, anticipation, and the weight of a movement.
Breath as punctuation. Where you gather, where you hold, where you release — and how that decides what lands.
Word-for-word is a place to start, not a place to stay. Finding what a song is actually about.
Inhabiting a space rather than signing at a camera. Stillness, gaze, and the rests between phrases.
What all of it becomes once it moves through you. Not imitation, not technique — identity.
Two details that can change how a performance comes across. Mouth morphemes, English mouthing, mimicry, and the relationship between gaze and expression — and how to recognise the habits you want to revisit and the choices you want to develop.
Six artists · one song

Your teacher

Rosa Lee Timm is a Deaf ASL artist, performer, and educator from a multigenerational Deaf family, with ASL as her first language. Her work moves between stage, film, and screen, and keeps returning to one question: what does music look like when it lives in a body instead of an ear? This course is her answer so far.
Enrollment is open
This course is not here to hand you one. It is here to help you find it, name it, and trust it.
Self-paced · One-time payment · Captions and transcripts included

If it isn’t what you hoped for, write to me within 14 days and I’ll refund you in full — as long as you haven’t gone past Module 01. After that, the course is yours to keep.
A confirmation has been sent to your email. Your course is ready whenever you are — no deadline, no rush. This is yours.
Where you are
Yours only
One file, built in your browser from what your account is allowed to read. A spreadsheet for each table, plus the same thing as JSON in case it ever has to go back in.
What is in it
What is not
Students' workbook writing. Their account can read it and nobody else's can — not even yours, by design — so no button here can reach it. The same is true of your own writing on another device. A copy of the whole database, that writing included, comes from Supabase itself rather than from this page.

Put the name you would like on your certificate and it is yours to keep. It carries the date you finished and a certificate number, in case anyone needs to check it.

Six Artists · One Song
Each of them was given the same challenge: translate a short excerpt of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman, and show how they would carry its musicality. Their work appears across the modules — not one artist to a module, but wherever their choices illuminate what that module is about.
Ask Me Directly
Working through something other people would benefit from? Put it in
that module's Lab — a question answered there helps the next twelve people who
arrive with it.
For anything private — access, payment, or something you would
rather not ask in front of everyone — write to me here. I read everything, and I
usually reply within a few days.
Thank you for writing. I read everything that comes through here, and I will reply to the address you gave — usually within a few days.
Work With Me
Sometimes it just helps to have someone watch.
A Studio Session is an hour, one to one — bring a translation you're working on, something that isn't landing the way you want, or a question you've been carrying since Module 02. We'll look at it together.
You're in the course, so it's less than my usual rate.

The Session
Working on a film, a series, or a stage production — or bringing an accessibility or brand problem rather than a piece of signing? That is a Strategy Session, and it lives on the booking page.
